Five tips to improve your results on the Language exam

Spanish Language and Literature is a subject in which essential knowledge is acquired for any competent speaker of our language, as it helps us express ourselves in a more correct and appropriate way and be aware of the mechanisms that our language makes available to us.

Facing the study of this subject will not be difficult if you follow these tips:

  1. Practice textsA very common mistake when preparing for this subject is thinking that you can get a good grade simply by memorizing concepts. All the theoretical knowledge you acquire must always be accompanied by practice. Train your reading comprehension and writing skills: read texts, summarize them, and write arguments. The question introduced this year focuses on structure; therefore, in addition to practicing summarizing and expressing opinions, analyze the method used (deductive, inductive, circular, etc.) and identify the main and supporting ideas in the text.
  2. Pay attention to the literatureThe most important thing is not to leave your literature studies until the last minute: get organized, make outlines, and be very clear about which authors are included in each topic. It's also important not to read them all at once, but to alternate the study of literary movements with other topics. Otherwise, you're likely to start mixing up information and create a jumble of names in your head. It's also advisable to be aware of the context in which each literary movement is situated, since, ultimately, the works of that period are a product of the times they were created in. Try to read a representative work from each movement or school of thought, as this will make your learning more meaningful and not just based on memorization. Furthermore, it will allow you to choose option b in the last part of the exam.
  3. Spend time reading the text and questionsIt is important that you read the exam text as many times as necessary. Reading it only once and then rushing to answer the questions will only force you to return to the text repeatedly to find what you need, wasting valuable time. Read the questions carefully and stick to answering what is asked. Don't ramble and respect the minimum and maximum length limits indicated in the questions.
  4. Take care of spelling. What you write is as important as how you write it. If points are deducted for spelling errors in all subjects, in this specific subject the criteria are more rigid. Review spelling rules and the use of punctuation marks, as they are essential. It is very annoying to have made an effort to study, answer the questions well and see how your grade decreases because of mistakes, accent marks or even handwriting.
  5. Control time and spaceYou must work within the time limit. If you know the format of the test you're taking, you'll already be familiar with its structure, which will help you estimate how much time you can dedicate to each question so you can complete the entire exam. If your test has a page limit, calculate beforehand how much you can spend on each exercise to avoid running out of space. Focus on what you can do best first and secure that score.

It would be advisable for you to do mock exams at home, as they will help you calculate these two parameters.
